The date is 1974. The house is Budapest, Hungary. Erno Rubik, an admirer of geometry and 3-D forms makes the world’s most perfect — and addictive — puzzle. More than three decades later the Rubik’s cube is still one of the best selling brainteasers. Whether it was full size or the smaller keychain translation nearly every child had this puzzle by in 1980 when it found worldwide success. Elementary school kids were seen solving it with their feet on “That’s Incredible!”, conspiracy theorists believed it was an Eastern bloc tactic to distract American youth from getting an education, and Cubaholics Anonymous was formally established to help cure the compulsive need to solve it.

Rubik’s Cube
Each side is just over 2″, while each sticker is about ½” square.
For all of the hullabaloo, the Rubik’s Cube really has a pretty straightforward premise. The faces of the cube are covered by nine stickers in six solid insignia (one for each 2.25″ side); when the puzzle is solved, each face is one solid color. Then you realize as you turn the rows and columns and see all the insignia flash by that there are 43 quintillion possible try out combinations (that’s 43 million millions), but just one right one. Maybe Cubaholics Anonymous wasn’t such a terrible thought after all….

This Rubik’s Cube has reflective red, white, blue, yellow, green, and orange colored stickers with an official twenty-fifth anniversary sticker in the center white square. The cube is packaged in a clear hexagon box and includes a black show stand. There is also a solutions hint and game suggestion book, just in case.

Customer Review for Rubik’s Cube at Amazon

My wife is 72 and I am 74 and with Rubiks Cube we have a lot fun. We use it no only as an educational toy, but to cool ourselves after some disputes. Very nice stuff. Paul -- Rubik's Cube - Geat Stuff
This is the old original style rubiks. More fun than some of the newer adaptations. The grandkids are having fun with it. -- robiks cube
The cube takes skill and patience, but once it is learned, it is easy. The challenge is not only complete the cube, but then to use spatial skills to solve it faster and more efficient. There are many different possibilities of solutions as well, you can make the challenge as hard or as easy as you would like, but stick with it either way! I find it soothing and relaxing to keep solving it over and over, and it's always good for a great party trick! -- I heart the Rubik's cube!
i never figured out how to work this thing when i was a kid, but now with the internet to help, i bought it and leanred how to finish it, lots of fun -- fun toy
